The poems here are presented in the original Hebrew and English translation. Most of the poems included in this book were originally published in English in the following collections of Amichai's poetry; Amen, Poems, Songs of Jerusalem and Myself, Time, Selelcted Poems, Great Tranquilitry: Questions and Answers and Even the Fist Was Once An Open Hand and Fingers.
This poem, “Jerusalem,” is from Feinstein’s most recent book of poetry, “Cities” (Carcanet ). The “lyrics,” as she calls the four parts of the sequence, depict four phases in the history of modern Jerusalem and four phases in a woman’s life.
The poetry of the most recent generation is dominated by individualism and perplexity, and tends towards short poems written in colloquial diction, non-rhymed free rhythm.
Poetry in Israel has a large and loyal readership and some volumes of poems, of all periods, are sold in editions as large as those published in much more populous Western. Yehuda Amichai is recognized as one of Israel’s finest poets.
His poems, written in Hebrew, have been translated into 40 languages, and entire volumes of his work have been published in English, French, German, Swedish, Spanish, and Catalan. “Yehuda Amichai, it has been remarked with some justice,” according to translator Robert Alter, “is the most widely translated Hebrew poet since.
However, on the page, Burstein is far from ordinary — he has written five novels, a book of poetry, a book of stories, a nonfiction book about the stories of people on Kibbutz Lohamei Ha. Desnos was, however, indeed a poet hero.
In the Résistance, he specialized in forging identity papers. In testimony at the Paris memorial inJacques F., who was a young boy from a non-practicing Jewish family in hiding during the occupation, recalled that Desnos, a family friend, would visit and amuse the child with stories and poems.
